Freetime...what do you do with it?
Hi, all,
This is my first semester teaching that I actually have free time, which is amazing, because I am teaching more classes than I ever have had to! I might have mentioned this before in class, but this is my first semester teaching at Collin County after teaching at UT Arlington for almost five years. I was also working on my Ph.D. there, and with my own classes I was taking and teaching, helping to take care of my three year old step-son, very little money (this is the first job I will be making more than 1300 dollars a month!), getting married, buying a house and then moving, and being pregnant and then losing my daughter to SIDS, this is the first time I have the money, time or energy to do fun things! Now, my husband and I are secure in our marriage and starting to feel happy again after months of grieving, our step-son is able to play by himself (sort of) when he visits us, and we can afford to splurge _a little bit_, even though we still have to be careful because we are still catching up on various bills. So, this means I am open to suggestions of fun things to do. We live in downtown Dallas and I take the train to work, so we have been doing things around that area or that can be gotten to by the train. For instance, we are looking forward to the State Fair, and I have been watching tons of movies (just recently saw two good movies: Monsoon Wedding and Beautiful Mind), and reading some good books (most recently "Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold and Margaret Mead's biography). But, I am open to suggestions for fun things to do. Of course, I know that you guys might have less time for fun things now that you are in college, but maybe I can do the fun things you don't have time for, and report about them to you guys. :)
Keep writing,
Melissa

Hi Mrs. McCarter,
This is Wendy from your 1302 (TTh 8:30-9:45) class. I have my blog set up and my web address is http://windchime7.blogspot.com.
I just wanted to tell you how sorry I was to hear about your little girl. A very good friend of mine, Chris and her husband lost their little girl to a rare heart condition a few years ago. She was barely a week old. I did want to commend you and your husband for sticking together through that terrible time in your lives. To me that really shows true commitment and devotion.
In response to what I do with my free time is a lot of different things.
Like you, I also like to watch movies and read books. I also like to play internet games and watch my nighttime TV shows: Smallville, Survivor, Lost, and Everwood. FYI: there is a Dollar movie theatre (Movies 10) on Coit & Park. My friends and I go there whenever we want to see a movie but we are broke. It's pretty cool.
There's also a place called Main Event on 75 just south of Spring Creek and they have a bunch of things to do: bowling, arcade, laser tag, etc. It can be a bit expensive, but it's a lot of fun.
Another fun thing that I like to do is camping. Some friends of mine and I going to Broken Bow for a weekend next month. I love camping. I just don't get to do it too often.
I'm also planning on going to the State Fair. If your step-son has never gone before, he should like it. There's a bunch of things to see, good food, and fun games and rides.
I hope you have a good weekend, and I will see you on Tuesday.
Melissa,
When I first came to Dallas I thought it was a boring city and there was nothing interesting to do. It would never like home where parties never end but I'm trying to do other kind of things. I live un Plano but I have been in downtown Dallas. I went to the Reunion Tower (restaurant) the food is really good and you have a perfect view of Dallas. If you take the Dart, you can stop in the Zoo, in the Museum of Art, and also in Mockingbird Station, which is my favorite. It's all full of small restaurants, bars, cofeterias, stores, and many ither things. I think you would like it. About movies, Sunday is my movies day, no one can take it away. LOL. The last movie I saw was WIMBLENDON becuase I love tennis. BUt next weekened I will go and see THE FORGOTTEN and CELLULAR. If you want to stay home, go to Blockbuster and rent TAKING LIVES with Angelina Jolie, GODSEND with Robert DeNiro or OUT OF TIME with denzel Washington. I hope this helps a little bit, anyway if you do something let me know how it was and if you like it. HAVE FUN!

I like hearing about what all of you do in your free time! It has given me some inspiration. I think part of the problem of free time is that although you may have it, sometimes you are too exhausted to actually use it. I think that the comments about exercise are important...I know I need to exercise more, and I don't have any excuse with a exercise room in the building where I live!
Also, thank you for your sympathy about my loss...and I empathize with the others who have shared stories, on my blog and other blogs, about their own loss. As anyone knows who has suffered a loss in their life (and like one person said, almost everyone has and everyone will during their lifetime), it is hard to get back out in the world and feel open and safe to life after loss. Certainly, my husband and I losing our daughter has affected our ability to just relax and enjoy life. Both of us have a tendency to become work-a-holics when we are stressed out. I know that other people lose themselves in partying when dealing with loss. So, the challenge is finding joy in relaxing activities, when you are trying to keep your spirits up. So--your suggestions are very helpful for me and I am sure they might be helpful for other people, as well.
